Welcome to the Washington Liveaboard Association

The Washington Liveaboard Association (WLA) was formed in 1998 to serve as a conduit for sharing experience, education and information between people living aboard boats and their larger community. The WLA works to protect the liveaboard lifestyle and to serve as a representative of the liveaboard community.

The WLA currently serves a diverse and eclectic group of liveaboard boaters at Shilshole Bay Marina, most recently by negotiating renewal of the Liveaboard Agreement with the Port of Seattle. This agreement, first adopted in 1997, stands as a model for liveaboard agreements throughout the state. Under the agreement, liveaboards at Shilshole Bay Marina agree to adhere to a set of standards to protect the delicate ecosystem at the marina and to administer a Dock Captain Program to enhance safety and security for all boaters at the marina. At present, there are about 220 boats housing registered liveaboards. The total number of boats in the marina is reduced due to construction to improve facilities, but when dock renovation is completed in early 2008, there will be 300 slips available to liveaboards out of 1,411 total slips in the marina.

The WLA is governed by a Board of Directors, comprised of up to 15 liveaboards elected by the general membership. The board meets monthly (except August) on the second Thursday in the Shilshole Bay Marina conference room (on the east side of the marina building) at 7:00 p.m.  Meetings are open to the public.

Membership is open to any authorized liveaboard in the State of Washington. For more information, write to:  WLA, 6535 Seaview Ave. N.W. #201B, Seattle, WA 98117 or contact us via email.
